Research, testing & risk visibility

Understand the behaviour behind the result.

Bring strategy rules, data and operating evidence into a reviewable workflow. Scope research tools and risk visibility around the questions your team needs to answer, with assumptions visible alongside the output.

WORKFLOW / ENGINEERINGIllustrative

Evidence-building workflow

  1. 01Prepare data
  2. 02Run defined tests
  3. 03Inspect exposures
  4. 04Explain results

Illustrative research process. Historical or simulated outcomes do not establish future performance.

01 / SCOPE

Make the experiment reproducible.

Useful research starts with a clear question and an identified dataset.

Data and backtests

Scope data collection, validation and storage with instrument identifiers, timestamps and gap handling. Define the backtest's decision timing, fill assumptions and transaction costs. Keep strategy versions and configurations with each run so the result can be traced to its inputs.

Parameter studies and replay

Build parameter comparisons, event replay and paper or demo workflows suited to the strategy. Record how parameters were selected and which data was used. Separate exploratory runs from reserved evaluation periods, and document where simulated behaviour differs from the intended execution environment.

02 / SCOPE

See positions, controls and outcomes together.

An operator needs both the intended action and the observed account state.

Exposure and stop controls

Scope account and instrument exposures, position limits, stop conditions and operator alerts. Specify the inputs each check relies on, stale-data behaviour and what a stop actually does: block new orders, request cancellations or trigger an explicitly authorised exit workflow.

Execution and realised results

Track fills, fees, funding and realised results using agreed calculation conventions. Flag missing records and reconciliation differences instead of presenting incomplete totals as final. Alert routing should identify the condition, affected account and expected operator response.

FROM BRIEF TO HANDOVER

A build you can review.

  1. 01

    Choose the question

Agree the research objective, relevant instruments and evidence needed to judge the software's behaviour.

  2. 02

    Specify assumptions

Document data sources, execution modelling, cost inputs and the limits of each testing environment.

  3. 03

    Build reviewable outputs

Deliver repeatable runs, comparative reports and traceable links between signals, orders and results.

  4. 04

    Set acceptance boundaries

Review known gaps and verify controls separately from any assessment of the underlying trading strategy.

Software tests and operational controls do not guarantee trading returns. Live access, deployment and operating limits are agreed separately.

BEFORE WE BEGIN

Questions worth asking.

Does a successful backtest validate live trading?

No. Historical tests and paper or demo runs have limitations and do not prove future results or live execution quality.

Can the dashboard prevent losses?

No control eliminates market losses. The scope defines which conditions the software can detect and which responses it may attempt.

Can you work with an existing dataset?

Yes, subject to access and usage rights. Start with its format, coverage, known gaps and the calculations you need.
