Repairs, Upgrades & Migrations

Change the system without losing track of its state.

For teams maintaining an existing contract, application or data service. Start with reproducible behaviour and a dependency inventory, then define a bounded change that can be tested, rehearsed and handed over with its remaining risks visible.

EVIDENCE BEFORE CHANGE

  1. 01Reproduce current behaviour
  2. 02Design the change path
  3. 03Rehearse and reconcile
  4. 04Approve controlled rollout

Illustrative engineering workflow. Interfaces, environments and responsibilities are assessed for the agreed scope.

01 / SCOPE

Understand what can actually be changed.

Deployments may have restrictions that source code does not reveal.

Repairs and fault isolation

Inspect authorised source, deployment records and dependency versions. Reproduce the reported fault and trace it across contract, application and data boundaries. Distinguish code defects from configuration, provider and operator issues before agreeing the repair.

Adaptation and compatibility

Scope changes to network interfaces, wallet providers, application frameworks or external services. Map behaviours that must remain stable and document differences that users will notice. Source access, licence permissions and a reproducible build are assessed before conversion work is accepted.

Change authority

Identify contract upgrade mechanisms, privileged roles and unavailable permissions. Determine whether the change requires an implementation upgrade, a replacement deployment or an application-only repair. Custody, legal and commercial decisions remain separate; engineering access does not confer approval to move assets.

02 / SCOPE

Plan the state transition, not just the deployment.

Every migrated record needs an agreed source and destination.

Contract upgrades

Review storage layout, initialisation, interface changes and administrative permissions. Specify version checks and upgrade order where supported. Test against representative prior state, including partially completed workflows. Immutable deployments may require replacement rather than an in-place change.

Asset and data migration

Define snapshots, mapping rules, balance or record reconciliation and handling of late-arriving events. Scope claim-based transitions or operator-assisted migration only where appropriate. Document what happens to old addresses, duplicate requests, missing records and users who do not migrate immediately.

Rehearsal and rollback limits

Rehearse the sequence in a suitable local or test environment with representative data. Establish pause points, acceptance checks and abort conditions. Describe where rollback is possible and where an irreversible transaction requires a separately designed recovery path.

03 / SCOPE

Leave the next operator with usable evidence.

Deployment is one checkpoint in the change process.

Regression and verification

Run agreed contract, integration and user-journey checks against the changed system. Compare state and outputs before and after the rehearsal. Record unresolved issues, environmental differences and dependencies. Audit preparation is not independent certification; independent review is separately scoped.

Maintenance and post-change checks

Prepare version records, changed configuration, operator instructions and a verification checklist. Scope post-change observation and maintenance explicitly, including who reviews exceptions and approves changes. Do not imply indefinite monitoring or unsupported recovery guarantees.

FROM BRIEF TO HANDOVER

Define, build and verify the whole workflow.

  1. 01

    Define

Document the fault or change request, available access and current deployment. Agree scope, excluded components, release authority and measurable acceptance cases.

  2. 02

    Build

Implement the smallest agreed repair or migration tooling. Preserve reproducible build inputs and maintain a clear record of behavioural changes.

  3. 03

    Verify

Rehearse deployment order, recovery decisions and state reconciliation. Run regression scenarios and present unresolved findings before any live transition is approved.

  4. 04

    Hand over

Deliver agreed code, migration instructions, evidence and version records. Confirm operating ownership, live execution responsibilities and the boundaries of follow-on maintenance.

BEFORE WE BEGIN

Useful answers.

Can any deployed contract be repaired?

No. Available mechanisms, permissions and dependencies determine the options. Some changes require a replacement deployment or cannot be performed through the existing contract.

Can a migration be reversed?

Only where the architecture permits it. Rehearsals must identify irreversible steps and recovery limitations before anyone approves live execution.

What access is needed to begin?

Source or build artefacts, deployment addresses, non-secret configuration and a description of the issue help establish scope. Do not send private keys, recovery phrases or passwords.
